Bone Grafting in Dothan, AL

A bone graft is a procedure used to restore lost or weakened bone in the jaw, typically performed to support long-term oral health and prepare for treatments like dental implants. At Southeastern Oral Surgery and Dental Implants, bone grafting is often recommended when bone has deteriorated due to tooth loss, gum disease, or trauma. This treatment helps rebuild the jaw’s strength and structure, ensuring a solid foundation for future restorative procedures and preventing further bone loss over time. To learn more about bone grafting or to find out if you're a candidate, contact Southeastern Oral Surgery.

The exact process of your bone graft procedure will depend on the type of graft used and the amount of bone needed. One of our oral surgeons may recommend an autograft, where bone is taken from another part of the body, such as the chin, hip, or lower leg. Other options include an allograft (donor bone), xenograft (animal-derived bone, usually from a cow), or an alloplast (synthetic bone material). This can often be performed in our office under sedation and local anesthesia, or at an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. During a consultation, one of our oral surgeons will explain these options and help the patient choose the best approach based on their needs and treatment goals.

When it's time for the bone graft, the oral surgeon will make a small incision in the gum tissue to access the jawbone. The graft material, along with proteins and collagen to encourage natural bone regeneration, will be placed and secured to the site. The area is then sutured and cleaned to begin the healing process. The entire procedure typically takes between 45 and 60 minutes, depending on the complexity and grafting method used.
